bold leafy garden
covered patio | tulsa, OK
Creative Brief
It all began with
getting sick of gray walls.
The family has lived in the house for years. After working on the inside to reflect their bold personalities, wanted to finally do something about their outdoor space. They are entertainers and wanted to create a more inviting space to host and play with their newborn.
I was immediately inspired by their love of plants and gardening. To tie in the potted plants and garden visible from the space, I pulled various leaf shapes to create an oversized boquet of leaves. When sitting back, you can view the full picture as a large flowing shape made of leaves. Close up, there are numerous hidden details and line work to draw your eye.
My favorite part is the effect the light has as the sun moves throughout the day.
Bold Refresh
Design:
Completely customized design pulling inspiration from various leaves and architectural elements existing in the space already. I always love organic shapes since they naturally lend themselves to a beautiful visual flow.
Location: Single-family home in historic Swan Lake neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Room: Outdoor covered porch used as an entertainment space, opening to the backyard. Wall is vinyl siding.
Total supply cost: $140
Size: 8ft x 20ft
the process
Colors: The rest of the walls in the space are gray and the ceiling white, so I know I needed to keep those for the space to feel like it is part of the space. For a bold pop to stand out from the green of the garden, we chose complementary colors blue and orange. These colors are also visible inside the home for a nod to their full living space.
Technique: All hand-painted free-hand.
Planning: The overall shape was created to tie in the white of the ceiling, gray visible on the other walls, and planning for a table in the center of the wall. The leaves all arch where people will be sitting so they become part of the piece without losing the overall visual flow of the room.
Exterior Decor Note: Painting this one focal wall helps incorporate personality and design without cluttering the space with more “things”.
