“Elmos World” Coloring Book

Kids bedroom | St. Louis, MO

Creative Brief

It all began with

getting a “big girl” room.

When a child asks for an Elmo room, you give her an Elmo Room… but with a more mature twist. I worked with the parents and Luna herself to design a room inspired by Elmo’s world, but could also grow with her as she got older.

Yes, I did have to watch Elmo’s World for research. I immediately noticed what I needed to do from the intro video: create a “coloring book” room with small illustrative figures of Luna’s favorite things. Elmo’s World comes to life when he draws it, so Luna’s whole room should be a coloring book in black and white with a “color portal” where she dreams.

This room is so filled with intentionality it’s hard to put into just one paragraph.

Project details

  • Location: Newly-renovated single-family home in the Maplewood neighborhood of St. Louis.

  • Room: Kids bedroom located off a main hallway.

  • Total supply cost: $180

  • Size: 15ft x 15ft room, 8ft ceilings

  • Technique: All hand-painted free-hand

  • Planning: Collaborative process between parents and child to identify the concept, colors, design, and elements.

Interior Decor Note: I love this project because it started from a child’s wish and became something that went beyond the typical. There are many “Elmo” rooms, but the end result here was able to honor her favorite character while still being able to grow with her and truly be her own space.
