There’s a LOT of detail in this room and I wanted to make sure it was not overwhelming, but still cute when walking by in the hallway. When you stand at the door, you primarily see the white and black clean lines. When you walk in, the color portal is like a little treat (and also where a lot of the pillow messiness of a kids room is). Nothing like tucking that out of sight with a good reason ;)

💡 This works great for kids’ rooms as you can buy a good cheap piece of furniture and easily make it whatever you want!

Anything that crosses over into the portal also have a color change to stay true to the concept. I wanted to make sure this was seen in every detail from the illustrated potted plant to the picture frames and table.

Luna loves to create art and stick it all over the walls. I painted picture frames of various sizes all over the room at safe heights so she doesn’t need an adult to put it into a picture frame for her. The higher ones across the room do have a frame wince she won’t be able to reach them.

I love details like this because it help promotes creativity AND helps direct the art so it looks more clean. She would do it anyways, so why not have it tie into the design?

In Elmo’s World, there are little clouds, bubbles, dashes, and stars when he gets a strong emotion. I incoporated these little details as a subtle nod to her inspiration and create a graphic dreamscape.

One of Luna’s favorite movies at the time was Beauty and the Beast. Since this is part of the “gallery wall” outside of the color portal, I used mostly line work and only a pop pf color to tie into the portal across the room.

As an avid gardener and someone too small to trust with a potted plan in her room, I made sure to include her favorite flower. This sits right next to the door so it’s a fun detail only when standing in the room. It also crosses over the color portal so on the left side, it becomes more colorful and “comes to life”.

In Elmo’s room, there’s a rocket hanging from the ceiling. I do have dreams of a craft for Luna to create a rocket and hang it in her dream portal. In the meantime though, a rocket will sit on a fake shelf.

It’s a kids room so nothing is off-limits to get touched. To maximize space AND design, we picked up cheap white storage containers from Ikea and I wrote Luna’s name on them like alphabet blocks. Since both her first and last name have four letters, this worked perfectly. There are also 2 blank sides for her to freestyle any design she’d like.

With the color portal being an accessible blue and an accessible shape, we were able to find the PERFECT rug at Ikea.

This is why every detail and being intentional counts. It always pays off in the end!

A week after I left the home, I saw Luna was already able to make a craft to place on her color portal.

All furniture was chosen and/or painted for this same effect. This includes the doors, windows, ceiling, daybed, and even dresser.

To break free from the primary colors that would present as elementary, we played with a more mature tint to the main colors by choosing the variation on the left.
